Earth Day Festival

Happy Spring!

The frozen ground has thawed, making way for the spring bluets that carpet the ground. Birds are chirping, squirrels and rabbits are scurrying, and One World Adventure Company is right in the middle of it all, getting ready for another great season.

On April 23, 2011 we are holding an Earth Day Festival in Mentone. Proceeds from the event will go towards Outdoor Education programs in our community. This will be fun for the entire family, so come out to Brow Park and be a part of this Earth Friendly Event. This years Earth Day theme is Buying Local, Conservation and Recreation. OWAC; Activities at Home

Spring is here and One World Adventure Co. is ready! Beginning in March we will offer fun adventure outings, community outreach projects and sustainable workshops to our Mentone community.

Kayaking, Hiking, and Climbing are a few of the activities we will schedule. A calender of OWAC events will be placed around town and at the schools. It is our goal to provide the residents of this area with options to get outside and enjoy one of the best parts of Mentone; nature!

Community Outreach projects will include river and neighborhood clean-ups, residential home repairs, and The Garden Initiative - where our volunteers will help put gardens in for anyone who is interested in growing their own food. We want to help make it possible for our neighbors to create positive change in the community.

Sustainable Workshops will be held monthly to help residents along the path of becoming more sustainable in their everyday lives. We will work on projects like Recycling, Reducing Waste, Passive Solar Water Heaters, Raising and Preserving food, rain water systems, and Conservation.

OWAC is excited to provide most of our activities for free or very little to members. Starting in March, folks will have the opportunity to become a member of our organization where special offers will apply.
So, get ready Mentone, this OWAC season is about to get seriously fun!!

One World Adventure Company thrives to make the most out of your group retreat. We are pleased to offer our Service/Adventure Retreat Package.
Choose from a list of exciting adventure activities made to challenge you to go outside your "comfort zone" and try a new activity in a safe and encouraging environment. No prior experience is needed and all activities are challenge by choice. If you are ready for a "non-traditional" vacation, this special combination package is a great way to acheive personal goals and give back.

One World Adventure Company 2011

The season for One World is coming to a close. We will be busy writing grants and promoting our 2011 programs during the winter months. I wanted to let you all in on what we have in front of us.
Youth Adventure Travel Programs- We have strategically planned trips during the summer of 2011 to suit the desires of all youth. Not every kid has the same ideas of fun so we come up with a week of backpacking, caving, boating, and climbing. Each week will focus on one activity and will give each kid the chance to learn all of the in's and outs of the program. We are also offering city tours up to 3 days to the South's greatest cities. They will take in sites such as museums, local restaurants, and learn about the history & culture of each city.
Couples Camp- I hear the question all the time, "Are your programs for adults too?" Although we work with youth, yes, we are going to give adults the opportunity to enjoy a camp experience. In May 2011, enjoy traditional camp activities such as canoeing, archery, horseback riding, riflery, art, woodworking and more.
Service Learning- Be a volunteer for One World Adventure Company and head up meaningful service projects in the community. If you have skills such as carpentry or gardening, we would love for you to spend time with us helping others.
Private Summer Camp Experiences- Do you live in a community that has lots of kids and everyone is going in too many directions. One World can come to your community and put on a week long day camp. Focusing on leadership, outdoor fun, health, art and more One World can make summer camp fun for the neighborhood kids and easy on parents.
Winning Athletic Teams Program- Give your team a true competitive edge and achieve top performance. One World can host any sports team, athletic department, and coaches workshops.
Workshops for Students- One World can provide a hands on learning experience that build tangible life skills and promote personal growth. Each workshop can range from one day to an on-going program.
Teacher and Staff Team-Building- Educators can choose an in-depth workshop that explores a specific topic or work on group fun, camaraderie, and rejuvenation through our team-building activities and initiatives.

If you would like to book a group for 2011, please give our office a call at 256-634-8370 or email us: angie@oneworldadventureco.com  or wyshugart@oneworldadventureco.com

Being one with nature

Man has a desperate need to get in touch with the delicate balance of nature and find his place. People speak of the fact that they have little idea of the consequences of their actions, and in doing so, makes one reflect upon their lost connection with the world around them.

If only people would look back to roots of their being, how people used to live, instead of insisting on the "progress" that does indeed make life more interesting, enjoyable, easier, and faster, but removes them from the nature that they are very much a part of despite their denial. As a species, humans seek to build to shield, shelter, and ignore the outdoors around us. We take what we need from the Earth, only recently figuring out how to do that with conservation in mind.

Many of us who live and work in the modern world of concrete, glass, tainted food, poisoned water and air, punctual schedules, grinding traffic and a life dictated by economics will never get nor take the chance to find our true selves. Many of us will never become one with nature because we will never escape for a moment to even begin the journey.

Look at nature as being a giant tapestry that is composed of millions of finely woven intricate fabrics. Every one of those fabrics is integral to the beauty and cohesiveness of the entire tapestry. No one fabric has greater worth or utility. Now, instead of merely appreciating the tapestry as an observer, envision yourself as one of the fabrics รณ become one with the whole.

Philosopher and writer Henry David Thoreau was constantly striving for a state of oneness with the natural world. He would spend hours upon hours engaging in the simplest tasks of just walking, observing, listening and feeling to attain this state. On appreciating the “fabrics” and the very shape they take, Thoreau notes, “How long we may have gazed on a particular scenery and think that we have seen and known it, when, at length, some bird or quadruped comes and takes possession of it before our eyes, and imparts to it a wholly new character.” The “fabrics” are dynamic, and the “tapestry is forever taking a new pattern or form.” Our lives too when fused with nature will continue to take new forms and paths all leading to richness and a sense of purpose.
Thoreau of course believed that, “In wildness is the Preservation of the world.” His prescription to oneness is quite simple. He wrote in his journal in 1851, “How important is a constant intercourse with nature and the contemplation of natural phenomena to the preservation of moral and intellectual health!”

In parting, I wish to leave you with this thought. Trees, grass, rivers, nature, flows and grows effortlessly. Unlike humans, they do what they do, naturally. We choose to have stress, frustration, busy lives and will not put it down long enough to take in our natural surroundings. Be IN Nature and feel it's energy every time you get the opportunity and thank the creator for allowing you to be a part of such an amazing world. Take care of it, make conscience choices to preserve it like it is a member of your family. Nature is God and if you want to feel close to him....Go take a hike.

The Recycling Revolution

Say you want a revolution?
This is where you might expect me to overwhelm you with facts that are supposed to scare or guilt you into recycling because if you don't the world will end. While it's true that there are numerous downsides to NOT recycling, I like to focus on the positive.
I even waffle from time to time on the issue, when I look at my small home and think about the fact that the nearest recycling center is 40 miles away, I admit that I hesitate. While I am an advocate of consuming less and producing less waste, the biggest challenge I face is getting the rest of my family in on the enthusiasm. Let's face it, we all want to do our part to reduce our footprint but when it comes down to it, everyone has to be willing not to back down from the less attractive side of the green revolution.
Recycling, in my opinion is one of the top choices in preserving our planet. My family of five has reduced it's actual landfill waste to one bag of garbage a week!! Everything else that we throw away can be recycled or composted!! TO ME, THAT IS AMAZING, considering we could make a garbage can overflow each week. I try very hard not to buy products that can't be recycled, like sour cream, yogurt, and plastic containers in which my center doesn't accept. It is good to visit your neighborhood recycling center, since they all differ.
Here are a few more benefits to recycling, and I challenge you to do your part.

  • Every ton of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees.
  • The energy we save when we recycle one glass bottle is enough to light a light bulb for four hours
  • It is important to reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Recycling helps us do that by saving energy
  • A national recycling rate of 30% reduces greenhouse gas emissions as much as removing nearly 25 million cars from the road.
  • Recycling conserves natural resources, such as timber, water, and minerals
  • When one ton of steel is recycled, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coaland 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.
  • Well-run recycling programs cost less to operate than waste collection, landfilling, and incineration.
  • Recycling creates 1.1 million U.S. jobs, $236 billion in gross annual sales and $37 billion in annual payrolls.
**These recycling facts have been compiled from various sources including the National Recycling Coalition, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Earth911.org.

Item's you can recycle: Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum cans, tin cans, plastic bags, batteries, cooking oil, ink cartridges, and more.

REMEMBER, You can do it and it does matter!!!

Adventure Sports

Sport has always been a means for people to increase their mastery of nature and the environment. So it is not surprising that in recent times there has been a move towards adventure sports as a form escapism. Adventure sports are a way of transcending the routines, stresses and demands of everyday life.

Active bodies stay healthier and when a body is active, it usually looks and feels better. One particular aspect of adventure sports activities is that they can promote a real sense of personal satisfaction, which can lead to increased confidence and increased social acceptance.

If you would like to get into an adventure sport and are not sure where to start then let us help. One World Adventure Company offers Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Canoeing, Kayaking, Caving, and Backpacking.
We can work with beginners from ages 10 and up. Groups need to be no less than 10. So gather a couple of families, or a group of friends and give us a call. One World provides gear, food, and lodging for a reasonable price.
